The Westbrook High School library staff hopes that desserts and goodies will help lure parents to learn about electronic resources available from home or school for student research.
This sweet deal is being offered on Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Westbrook High School Library. Librarian Deb Locke promises an appetizing introduction to the free online databases provided by MARVEL! – the state of Maine’s virtual library of resources – as well as the subscription databases provided to support the high school curriculum. An overview of Turnitin.com, the plagiarism prevention service used at the junior high and high school, will follow.
Parents will also have the opportunity to sign up for PASS – the Parental Access Support System – which provides password-protected online access to student grades, academic history, test scores, honors, awards, a school events calendar and more.
During the second hour, parents will be invited to practice hands-on with the databases, using the library’s computers or the mobile laptop lab, to explore the many information sources available and learn how to help their sons and daughters develop their searching skills and access vital information needed for research and success in school.
The MARVEL! Databases are available to all Maine citizens, schools and libraries at htpp://libraries.maine.edu/mainedatabases/. There is a link to MARVEL! On the high school library’s Web site, www.blueblazeslibrary.com, which also provides password access to the high school’s electronic resources.
