Bowdoin’s men’s and women’s lacrosse teams have played well in the early portion of the 2009 season. Tennis has also been active in recent days, while a couple indoor track athletes brought the curtain down on the winter season in grand fashion.
Women’s lacrosse
The Bowdoin women’s lacrosse team won a pair of games in Florida, then dropped a thriller in their home opener last weekend. The Polar Bears squeaked past Drew 16-15 March 11, rallying from a 14-11 deficit. McKenna Teague, Katie Herter and Ingrid Oelschlager each scored three times. Herter had the game-winner with 30 seconds to go. Libby Barton, Katy Dissinger and Lindsay McNamara all had two goals. Last Thursday, Bowdoin beat Ohio Wesleyan 18-12 as Oelschlager and Christina Denitzio had four goals each. Stef Collins-Finn stopped 13 shots. Saturday, the Polar Bears hosted Trinity and despite a valiant effort, fell 13-12. Teague and Liz Clegg both scored three times. Collins-Finn made 15 saves as Bowdoin fell to 2-2 on the year. Bowdoin hosted Endicott Wednesday (too late for this edition) and goes to Amherst Saturday.
Men’s lacrosse
The Bowdoin men’s lacrosse team is now 2-0 on the season after a 10-7 victory at Trinity Saturday. The Polar Bears were down 7-6, but they rallied behind four unanswered goals. Matt Legg led the way with three goals. Jake McCampbell stopped 10 shots. Bowdoin (16th in the latest national poll) takes part in the Patriot Cup Tournament in Dallas early this week, then returns home to play Amherst Saturday at 1 p.m.
Tennis
Bowdoin’s men’s tennis team is 3-2 and ranked 11th nationally after Monday’s 8-1 win over Salisbury. The women lost 7-2 to Pomona-Pitzer Monday to fall to 3-3 on the season.
Indoor track
Two Bowdoin runners took part in the Division III Indoor Track and Field championships in Terre Haute, Ind., last weekend. Senior Alison Chase earned All-American honors after finishing fifth in the 800 (2 minutes, 14.22 seconds). Anne Monjar was 15th in the 5,000-meter (18:18.60).
Field hockey
Bowdoin’s two-time Division III national champion field hockey team was honored last week by the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association with the 2009 Academic Team Award. Bowdoin passed the 3.0 grade point average requirement needed. Nine individuals had GPAs of 3.3 or higher to qualify as Academic All-Americans.
