YARMOUTH — Alan MacNeill Rand, 78, died April 7 at Brentwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
He was born on May 26, 1930 in Bangor, the son of Frank Sterling and Willena (MacNeill) Rand.
His family moved to Yarmouth in 1937 after his mother purchased the Seth Mitchell Tavern.
In 1950, he graduated from Portland High School.
He worked in various fields over the years, including real estate. With his longtime friend and business partner, Milton Nixon, he built the Royal Marine Co., which is now a public boat launch on the Royal River.
Citizenship was important to him and he served on the Yarmouth School Board and as a selectman for the Town of Yarmouth.
He was an avid storyteller who loved duck hunting and taking his boat to the islands.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Deborah (Darling) Rand of Yarmouth; son David Rand and his wife Sharon of Freeport, daughter Carol (Rand) Fraser and her husband Joseph of Freeport, son Alan M. Rand II, of Yarmouth, and son James Rand and his wife Shauna of Yarmouth; his sister Mary Jane Rand O’Donnell Hacker of Yarmouth; his grandchildren, Jennifer Rand Tali, Melissa Christine Fraser, Sean Patrick Fraser, Shaymus Galvin Rand; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held last week.
