CUMBERLAND — Beryl Lillian Cushing Lowell, 90, died April 11 at Mercy Hospital.

She was born in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 12, 1918, daughter of Florence (Woodman) and Benjamin Hilton Cushing.
She grew up in Portland and spent summers with family on Long Island at the Casco Bay House.

In 1938, she graduated from Draughn’s Business College in Tennessee and worked as a secretary in Portland prior to her marriage.

On May 23, 1942, she married Herbert G. Lowell Jr.

While living with her husband and daughters in Connecticut for many years, she worked as an executive secretary before retiring to Maine.

Her interests included sewing, world events, hiking and spending time with family at her Higgins Beach cottages. She was community-minded, spending time volunteering at Mercy Hospital and serving as a longtime member and past president of the Walnut Hill Garden Club of North Yarmouth.

She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert, brothers, Edward Cushing of Falmouth and Ronald Cushing of Bucksport and her sister, Pauline Clough of Falmouth.

She is survived by her daughters, Judith E. Lowell of Cumberland, Charlotte (Lowell) Hurd and her husband, J. Bradley, of Cumberland; granddaughter, Kate Hurd of Brookline, Mass.; brothers, Benjamin Cushing and his wife Virginia of Annapolis, Md., Donald Cushing and his wife Camilla, of Derry, N.H., sisters, Gwendolyn Dobbs of Virginia Beach, Va., Constance Brayley and her husband Warren, Lorraine Doughty and her husband Charles, all of Long Island; sisters-in-law, Jessie Cushing of Morrisville, Vt. and Iris Cushing of Bucksport; nieces and nephews; and grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service was held last week.
