PORTLAND — Maine College of Art opens a new multimedia lecture hall this week, the latest addition to the art school’s downtown campus.

Osher Hall is in the Porteous Building at 522 Congress St. The lecture hall seats 112 people and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology so the college can stream lectures live. Lecturers will have the ability to control lighting, video, television and computer presentations from a touch-screen panel embedded in the lectern.

The room was designed and constructed by Richard Renner Design, Wright-Ryan Construction and Headlight Audio Visual. It was paid for in part by a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation.

Last fall, MECA opened two new galleries on the Free Street side of the Porteous Building. An old department store, the Porteous Building is the college’s main space and the school has been renovating it since purchasing the building in the mid-1990s.

A reception to celebrate the opening is scheduled Tuesday, May 5, at 4:30 p.m. at Osher Hall, on the second floor of the Porteous Building.

For $250, the college is offering seat plaques. The plaques can either be engraved “In memory of,” “In honor of,” or “Given by,” followed by the name of the donor or honoree. The plaques will be installed on the arms of chairs in the lecture hall. For more information email tkane@meca.edu.
