Girls’ lacrosse: Waynflete has no peer

(Ed. Note: For full game stories on both Waynflete games last week, please visit our Web site: theforecaster.net).

The Waynflete Flyers girls’ lacrosse team entered last week eager for a challenge after destroying its first five foes by a composite 75-22 margin.

Despite hosting two top Western A contenders, the Flyers are still looking for a test.

Last Tuesday, Waynflete welcomed Scarborough and never let the Red Storm entertain hopes of competing, racing to an 11-3 halftime lead en route to an 18-6 victory behind five goals and three assists from junior birthday girl Morgan Woodhouse, four goals and two assists from senior All-American Mariah Monks and three goals each from senior Ellie Cole (who also had three helpers) and junior Amy Allen.

For the game, the Flyers won 17 of 25 draws, outshot Scarborough 29-20 and forced 17 turnovers.

“I didn’t expect to win by 12,” said Flyers coach Cathie Connors. “(Scarborough’s) strong and very fast. We were specific about getting after them off the draw and moving the ball around. We needed to pop the first few in quickly.”

“I think we worked really hard on getting pumped up before the game and making everyone on the team look really good and I think that helped us connect together,” added Cole. “We work hard on keeping it spread out. Cathie encourages assists instead of just goals. That’s what she values. That helps us look for other people.”

Last Thursday, Waynflete hosted longtime rival Kennebunk and while the game was a little tighter, the Flyers were again in control throughout in a 10-4 win.

This time, junior first-year goalie Sasha Timpson stood tall, stopping 15 shots in her most challenging game to date. The offense was paced by Allen, who led Waynflete with three goals. Cole and Monks both had two goals and three assists.

“Kennebunk is really strong,” said Timpson. “Having a close game really helped us. We hadn’t been under consistent pressure the entire time. It’s good for us to know we can maintain our focus under that pressure.”

“We would have been lost without Sasha,” Connors added. “She was definitely a key. Our defense and Sasha kept us in it. That’s her best game so far.”

Waynflete took a 7-0 mark, the top spot in the latest coaches’ poll and the No. 1 ranking in the latest Western Class B Heal Points standings into a game at Deering Tuesday (too late for print). Thursday, the Flyers play at a Cape Elizabeth squad which could provide its stiffest opposition in the region. Tuesday, Waynflete is at Cheverus.

Elsewhere, Cheverus got back in the win column Friday, bouncing back from losses at Cape Elizabeth (15-6) and at home to Falmouth (14-9) by downing host Greely 11-5. Junior Emily Van Duzer, who had five goals against the Yachtsmen, had three in the victory, as did sophomore Mary Dempsey. The Stags (2-4) snapped a four-game skid. Cheverus is idle until Thursday, then has a huge back-to-back test when it hosts undefeated North Yarmouth Academy and plays at talented Yarmouth in a little over a 24-hour span. Next Tuesday, the Stags host Waynflete.

Deering is still seeking its first win. The Rams lost by 12-3 scores to NYA and Greely, then fell 13-4 at home to Yarmouth Friday to fall to 0-4. Senior Natalie Mitchell had all three goals against the Rangers. Senior Louisa Gemmer scored three times against the Clippers. After hosting Waynflete Tuesday (too late for print), Deering is home with York Thursday, goes to Falmouth Saturday, then hosts Massabesic next Tuesday.

McAuley suffered its third one-goal loss of the season, 9-8, at home to Sanford last Tuesday, then improved to 1-4 Friday with an 18-5 victory at Fryeburg behind six goals from senior Gina Johnson and four from senior Skylyn Hilton, who also had four against the Redskins. The Lions were at Freeport Monday and home with Wells Tuesday (both games were played too late for print). Thursday, McAuley goes to Noble and the Lions visit Westbrook Friday.

In Western C, Waynflete snapped a five-game skid Friday with a dramatic 9-8 home victory over Sacopee. The Flyers rallied from five-runs down to eke out the win, thanks in large part to the dramatics of senior Zohar Azoulay, who homered, drove in three runs and scored the game-winner. Waynflete (2-6) was home against Old Orchard Beach Monday (too late for print), plays at NYA Wednesday.

Softball: No-hit Bell tolls for Deering

On the girls’ side of the diamond, the Deering Rams have struggled to win consistently this spring, but they did enjoy a magical afternoon last Thursday when they blanked Cheverus 4-0 behind senior Melissa Bell’s no-hitter. If that wasn’t dramatic enough, senior Heather Muzzy launched a three-run home run. Friday, however, the Rams fell to 2-8 after a 3-2 loss at Bonny Eagle.
