The Boston Red Sox announced Saturday that Tim Hyers has been hired as hitting coach and Andy Barkett will be an assistant hitting coach.
Hyers, 46, spent the last two seasons as the assistant hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers, also serving as director of minor league hitting in 2017. Hyers also worked in the Red Sox organization for seven years, first as an area scout for Georgia (2009-12), then as a minor league hitting coordinator (2013-15).
In 2014 he joined the major league staff in June for the remainder of the season while hitting coach Greg Colbrunn recovered from an injury.
Barkett, 43, has 12 years of pro coaching experience at the minor league level, posting a 610-569 (.517) record in nine seasons as a manager. He worked for the Pirates, Marlins and Detroit organizations.
Hyers takes over for Chili Davis, who spent three years as Red Sox hitting coach. Over that time Boston led the major league in runs (2,411) and pitches per plate appearance (3.95), and tied for first in on-base percentage (.334).
