RICHMOND, Va. — Kevin McAvoy (5-6) threw eight innings of two-hit ball, and Michael Chavis belted his 11th home run of the season for the Portland Sea Dogs during a 5-0 victory Tuesday over the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
The Sea Dogs have won 5 of 7.
McAvoy did not allow a hit in the first seven innings, striking out five. He walked one in each of the first two innings. After the Flying Squirrels’ K.C. Hobson reach on a two-out error in the second, McAvoy retired 16 straight. Hunter Cole ended that streak with a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth. One out later, Brandon Bednar singled for Richmond’s second and final hit.
Danny Mars singled home Henry Urrutia and Josh Tobias to cap a three-run second inning for Portland. Cole Sturgeon drew a bases-loaded walk to score the inning’s first run.
Chad De La Guerra doubled and scored on Chavis’ homer to left in the top of the eighth.
