CLEVELAND — Trevor Bauer struck out an AL-best 14 in seven innings, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Oakland Athletics 9-4 on Tuesday night.
Bauer’s career-best strikeout total was one shy of this season’s major league-high of 15 by Washington’s Stephen Strasburg against San Diego on Saturday.
Bauer (5-4) recorded his eighth career game of 10 or more strikeouts. He struck out the side in the first, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
He allowed three runs and seven hits with one walk.
Four Cleveland pitchers combined to strike out 19, tying a franchise record for a nine-inning game.
YANKEES 8, ORIOLES 3: Brett Gardner and Matt Holliday each homered twice, Aaron Judge drove in two runs and New York received a solid pitching performance from Luis Severino to win at Baltimore.
ROYALS 1, TIGERS 0: Eric Skoglund pitched 61/3 innings of two-hit ball in his major league debut, helping Kansas City beat Justin Verlander and visiting Detroit.
RANGERS 9, RAYS 5: Elvis Andrus had a career-high five RBI, including a tying three-run homer in the seventh inning, Jared Hoying hit a tie-breaking single that missed going out by about a foot and Texas Rangers rallied to beat visiting Tampa Bay.
ASTROS 7, TWINS 2: Jose Altuve had four hits and two RBI, Mike Fiers struck out eight over six innings, and the major league-leading Astros beat host Minnesota for their sixth straight victory.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
DIAMONDBACKS 3, PIRATES 0: Robbie Ray pitched a four-hitter in his first career complete game and Arizona won at Pittsburgh.
Ray (5-3) struck out 10.
MARLINS 7, PHILLIES 2: Giancarlo Stanton hit his third homer since moving into the No. 2 spot in the batting order, a change that has revived visiting Miami, which won its third game in a row.
Marcell Ozuna also homered for the Marlins.
DODGERS 9, CARDINALS 4: Chase Utley, Logan Forsythe and Chris Taylor combined to reach base 11 times and totaled six runs, helping visiting streaking Los Angeles win its sixth straight.
METS 5, BREWERS 4: Jay Bruce lined a game-ending single in the 12th inning and New York rebounded to beat visiting Milwaukee after shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera allowed the tying runs to score in the seventh when he flubbed a bases-loaded popup with two outs.
INTERLEAGUE
BLUE JAYS 6, REDS 4: Kendrys Morales hit a tie-breaking homer in the eighth inning, Josh Donaldson added an upper-deck drive and Toronto won at home.
MARINERS 10, ROCKIES 4: Kyle Seager homered and drove in four runs, Robinson Cano also connected and Seattle won at Denver.
Jean Segura had four hits and Ariel Miranda (5-2) pitched five innings to help the Mariners sweep two games in Denver and pin a rare series loss on Colorado. It was just the Rockies’ third loss in 17 series and first since April 24-27 against Washington.
