After more than 40 years as a Christian minister, I found myself deeply ashamed of my clergy colleagues who took part in the presidential inauguration.
Their inability to offer prayers that were inclusive of non-Christians was disheartening and damaging to our social fabric. They used their few seconds in the spotlight to push their own religious brand rather than show respect for the faith of others and help to bring us all together.
To my Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Baha’i, nonbelieving and other friends, I apologize for the narrowness and lack of vision displayed by these pastors on the day of the inauguration. There are many, many of us Christians who want to honor you, respect you, love you and learn from you. Look for us. We’re here.
