Mark Bedell, who ran unsucessfully for a state House seat in a Saco district, has been indicted on a charge of assaulting a woman at his house in October.

The indictment on aggravated assault and domestic violence assault charges was announced by a York County grand jury Thursday.

Bedell, 50, was arrested Oct. 23. Few details about the alleged assault were announced at the time, although a York County assistant district attorney said it involved the strangulation of a woman who was friends with Bedell.

He posted $2,500 cash bail after the arrest and was released.

Democrat Margaret O’Neil easily won the race for the House seat, which had been held by Democrat Justin Chenette, who ran for state Senate.

Bedell resisted calls by Republican leaders to step aside in the race after his arrest.

His lawyer could not be reached Thursday.
