BURLINGTON, Vt. — Derek Lodermeier had a goal and an assist, and the Vermont men’s hockey team scored two goals in the third period Saturday to come away with a 2-2 tie against Maine at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Lodermeier set up Tom Forgione 2:03 into the third before scoring unassisted about six minutes later for the Catamounts (7-3-2, 3-2-1 Hockey East).
Brendan Robbins of Maine (4-7-3, 1-4-1) opened the scoring at 9:08 of the second period from Sam Becker and Keith Muehlbauer.
Patrick Shea made it 2-0 just over a minute later from Nolan Vesey and Chase Pearson.
Rob McGovern made 43 saves, including four in overtime for the Black Bears, who were outshot 45-26.
SOUTHERN MAINE 5, UMASS-BOSTON 2: A.J. Johnson scored two goals, Kyle Shapiro made 48 saves and Brett Norman had four assists as the Huskies (3-3, 2-3 New England Hockey) downed the Beacons (4-2, 2-2) at Boston.
Cole Klippenstein, Brendan Murphy and Cody Braga also scored for the Huskies, who were outshot, 51-12.
BOWDOIN 5, MIDDLEBURY 3: The Polar Bears (1-1) scored four goals in the third period to defeat the Panthers (0-2) at Brunswick.
The Polar Bears, down 3-1, rallied with Austin Ricci scoring twice, and Pat Geary and Chris Wallace each adding a goal.
Panthers goalie Brian Ketchabaw recorded 28 saves. Nathan Colannino stopped 20 shots for Bowdoin.
COLBY 4, WILLIAMS 1: Nick O’Connor scored twice to lead the Mules (2-0) over the Ephs (1-1) at Waterville.
Devin Albert and Phil Klitirinos also scored for Colby.
BASKETBALL
SOUTHERN MAINE 131, WHEATON 125: After 24 ties and 14 lead changes, the Huskies (2-1) defeated the Lyons (1-2) in five overtimes at Middletown, Connecticut.
James Starks led the Huskies with 30 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks.
Byron McMillian of USM sent the game to a third overtime on a 3-pointer with five seconds left to make it 104-104.
SOUTHERN MAINE CC 69, VERMONT TECH 66: Michael Harmon hit a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Seawolves (7-1) over the Knights (4-3) at South Portland.
John Morgan had 18 points and eight rebounds for SMCC. Chase Soares added eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.
BOSTON UNIVERSITY 102, MAINE 78: Justin Alston scored 16 points to lead the Terriers (2-1) over the Black Bears (1-2) at Boston.
Andrew Fleming led the Black Bears with 17 points and nine rebounds.
COLBY 81, FITCHBURG STATE 63: Maximilian Steiner had 12 points, 14 rebounds and five assists to lead the Mules (2-0) over the Falcons (1-2) at Waterville.
The Mules nailed 14 3-pointers, going 9 of 12 in the second half.
BATES 83, SALVE REGINA 63: Malcolm Delpeche finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bobcats (1-1) over the Seahawks (0-3) at Worcester, Massachusetts.
The Bobcats led 40-25 at the half and put the game away with a late 13-0 run.
UNE 69, UM-FARMINGTON 67: Drew Coveney hit a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Nor’easters (1-2) over the Beavers (0-2) at Waterville.
Coveney led the Nor’easters with 19 points. His winning shot capped a comeback by the Nor’easters, who trailed by 14 points with 5:12 remaining.
FOOTBALL
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 44, HUSSON 27: Dante Aiken rushed for 99 yards and scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns at Springfield, Massachusetts, as Western New England (11-0) dropped Husson (8-2) from the NCAA Division III playoffs.
