Maine falls to California in field hockey playoffs
Katerina Carter scored an unassisted goal with 3:12 to play to give California (5-12) the lead for good as it eliminated Maine (13-7) in the opening round of the America East field hockey playoffs with a 3-2 victory Friday in Stockton, California.
Maine’s Danielle Aviani scored the only goal of the first half, banking a feed from Lilla Tilton-Flood with 3:11 left.
Nicole Henriksson tied the game on an assist from Carter 4:31 into the second half, before Aviani gave Maine the lead back with her second goal of the game on a set-up from Samantha Wagg 6:02 later.
Keats Iwanaga scored the game-tying goal for Cal on a penalty stroke with 6:23 left.
Emma Cochran and Emily Corbett combined for six saves for the Black Bears, Danielle Mentink turned aside eight shots for California.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Sydney Helmbrecht turned aside 23 shots as the University of New England (1-2) shut out Southern Maine (0-2) 2-0 in a non-conference game in Gorham.
Marykate Drinkwater scored with assists from Shannon Smith and Abby Kinens 1:05 into the second period to open the scoring for the Nor’easters, while Annie Mullen added a third-period goal on a feed from Melissa Boudreau.
Britney Evangelista had 25 saves for the Huskies.
MEN’S HOCKEY: Cam Beecy, Todd Jackson and Austin Surowiec scored third-period goals to lift Norwich (1-0-1) to a 4-2 victory over Southern Maine at Northfield, Vermont.
Brendan Murphy and Cole Klippenstein scored for USM (1-1).
TENNIS
PARIS MASTERS: Three-time defending champ Novak Djokovic lost in the quarterfinals, leaving his No. 1 ranking open to being snatched by Andy Murray.
The British player can rise from No. 2 to 1 in the ATP list for the first time if he reaches the final. He needs one more win after beating Tomas Berdych 7-6 (9), 7-5. His semifinal opponent will be No. 5 Milos Raonic, who defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Murray was aware of Djokovic’s defeat when he took the court and was sometimes hesitant against Berdych. He rallied from 6-1 down in the tiebreak, and needed four match points to overcome the Czech.
HOCKEY
NHL:Cam Atkinson, Nick Foligno, Scott Hartnell and Josh Anderson each scored two goals and the host Columbus Blue Jackets broke their scoring record in a 10-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
The Canadiens dropped to 9-1-1 with their first regulation loss of the season.
• Brandon Tanev scored his second goal of the game with 1:16 left to help the Winnipeg Jets beat the host Detroit Red Wings 5-3.
SOCCER
WORLD CUP: Geoff Cameron, projected to start at center back in the United States’ World Cup qualifiers against Mexico and Costa Rica, appears doubtful to join the national team because of a hyperextended knee.
U.S. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann is expected to unveil his squad Sunday.
HORSE RACING
BREEDERS CUP: Beholder edged Songbird by a nose to win the $2 million Distaff on opening day at Santa Anita, California, handing the 3-year-old filly her first loss in 12 races.
Nine Cup races will be run Saturday, capped by the $6 million Classic in which California Chrome is the early favorite.
