BANGOR – A campaign commercial focusing on an effort to weigh schoolchildren in Maine has sparked a row involving congressional opponents and state medical associations.
The National Republican Congressional Committee released the ad last week. It criticizes Democrat Emily Cain, who is running against Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin.
The ad depicts mothers chiding a bill Cain sponsored when she was in Maine’s Legislature in 2007. The bill was designed to gauge child obesity. Speakers in the ad describe it as a violation of privacy.
WLBZ-TV reported that the Maine Medical Association says the ad unfairly disparages a bill designed to confront a critical children’s health issue in the state.
Cain and Poliquin have also sparred over the ad. Cain calls it a “distortion” while Poliquin’s camp says the measure is “extreme.”
