Noah Carpenter of Leavitt was chosen as Maine’s Gatorade Football Player of the Year for the second year in a row after leading the Hornets to a second straight undefeated season and Class C state championship.

Carpenter, a 6-foot, 205-pound senior, excelled as a dual-threat quarterback, defensive back, kicker and punter for a team that proved itself against the toughest competition. The Hornets posted three wins against Class A schools, including state champion Thornton Academy and 2022 champion Oxford Hills, and also defeated Class B runner-up Lawrence.

The University of Maine-bound Carpenter, also a two-time Varsity Maine Player of the Year and one of four finalists for the Fitzpatrick Trophy, passed for 1,801 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 1,351 yards and 23 touchdowns. On defense, he had five interceptions and 110 tackles. He also was an outstanding punter and made 32 of 35 extra points as a kicker.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

FALMOUTH 72, GREELY 47: Billy Birks paced a balanced attack with 17 points, and the Navigators (6-1) pulled away in the second half against the Rangers (3-4) at Falmouth.

Birks got nine of his points in the second quarter, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer that gave Falmouth a 40-30 halftime lead.

Six players made at least one 3-pointer for Navigators, who also got 12 points from Chris Simonds.

Jackson Leding sank five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points for Greely. Kade Ippolito scored 13.

GIRLS’ HOCKEY

EDWARD LITTLE 7, MT. ARARAT 2: Kylee Spugnardi notched a hat trick, and Mackenzie Grenier recorded four assists as Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland (6-3) beat Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse/Medomak (1-9) at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.

Spugnardi’s first two goals helped the Red Hornets grab a 2-1 lead after one period. Grenier then set up second-period goals by Avery Cologna, Spugnardi and Helena Moon that stretched the lead to 5-1.

Olivia Doyon and Ella Labelle added third-period goals.

Val Swenson scored both goals for Mt. Ararat.

THORNTON ACADEMY 5, MARSHWOOD 1: The Golden Trojans (5-0) scored four goals in the third period to beat Marshwood/Traip/Sanford/Noble (3-4) at Biddeford Ice Arena.

Gavin Pellerin snapped a 1-1 tie 2:43 into the third, and Alex Alonso made it 3-1 just 29 seconds later. Brennan Tabor and Brady Pecora each tacked on an unassisted goal in the final six minutes.

The Marshwood co-op grabbed an early lead on a goal by Shane Cullity just 2:15 into the game. Thornton’s Gavin Corson tied it early in the second.

Trojans goalie Drew Johnson and Ben Ott of the Knighthawks each made 22 saves.
