Sgt. Maj. Calvin Lynn

PORTLAND – Sgt. Maj. Calvin Lynn (retired) of Portland, 82, passed away from complications of a stroke at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough on Nov. 28, 2023.

He was born March 19, 1941 in Collins, Ga., the son of William Grice Lynn and Rosa Lee (Warren) Lynn. Calvin graduated from Collins High School, class of 1959.

After high school he enlisted in the Georgia National Guard. Not feeling the draw of the Army, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1960. He served 28 years at various bases throughout his career, with six combat tours: including three to Vietnam, two to Beirut, and the Grenada invasion. During an early tour to Marine Barracks Brunswick, Maine he met the love of his life, Marine Sgt. Sally Ann Roast. They got married and spent 50 wonderful years seeing the world together. Their wedding anniversary was the Marine Corps birthday – so he would never forget it.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Sally Ann (Roast) Lynn; brother, Allen Lynn, sisters Bobbi Murphy, Jemima Cowart, and Rita Lewis.

He is survived by his daughter, Sherri Hinson (Jeff) of Midlothian, Va., and son, William Lynn (Tracey Barris) of Portland; granddaughter, Emily Lynn of Westbrook, and grandson, William Garrett Lynn of Portland. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Sikes of Ellabell, Ga. and sister-in law, Mary Ann Lynn, of Savannah, Ga.; along with many nieces and nephews.

The family thanks the staff at Massachusetts General Hospital and Maine Veterans Home for the loving and thoughtful care Calvin received at their facilities. Calvin was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had a big heart and a wonderful sense of humor. He will be remembered for the heart he shared with his friends and family – and his steadfast love of the Marine Corps. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post #6859.

Visting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Service, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland. A Military send-off will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the VFW post #6859, 687 Forest Ave., Portland.
