Edward Dyer MacCarthy Jr.
WINDHAM – Edward Dyer MacCarthy, Jr., 91, of Windham, passed away on Nov. 7, 2023.
Born in South Portland, Edward was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Elinor; and too many canine kids to mention.
He is survived by his five children, Edward MacCarthy III of South Portland, John MacCarthy of Tustin, Calif., Amy Bearce of Raymond, Rebecca Dolgin of Chappaqua, N.Y., Melissa Sims of Howell, N.J.; and by his nine granddaughters, Elizabeth, Kerry, Sophia, Beth, Laura, Makenna Charlotte, Chloe, Valentina, and one grandson, Elijah.
Edward graduated from Onondaga Valley Academy in Syracuse, N.Y., and attended the University of Maine, Hofstra University, and LeMoyne College. Edward served in the Army in the 3rd Armored Calvary Division on the Czech border during the Cold War. He was also a 32nd-degree Mason.
After his military service, Edward began his career in the automotive industry as the marketing manager for Chevrolet Motor Division in New York and subsequently owned several car dealerships in the Boston Metro area and Southern Maine. Anyone who knew him would agree he had one hell of a work ethic and even in his retirement drove a school bus for Waynflete, Windham, and South Portland school departments.
Edward loved spending time on the water, and any given weeknight after work you could find him swimming or boating and cooking burgers on his Coleman stove at Sebago Lake State Park. Having a flair for storytelling, he enjoyed recounting his lifetime of experiences, escapades, and interesting characters. Many of these stories were shared with the regulars at Chute’s during his morning breakfast ritual (where he claimed Courtenay made the best oatmeal).
He was meticulous when it came to his appearance—owning more shirts than Jay Gatsby, swapping out his watchbands to perfectly match them every morning, weekly trips to the barber, and constantly shining his shoes. He was always whistling a tune, sometimes punctuated by some expletives, he was a real character and will be greatly missed.
There will be a private family service. Online condolences may be expressed at http://www.hobbsfuneralhome.
