The cruel and unwarranted deaths of at least 18 Maine citizens prompted Portland Public Schools to close for the day “out of an abundance of caution.” Mass shootings are no longer so far away; they are almost normalized because they occur so frequently.
Eighteen innocent people are dead because our national senators are refusing to act to stop these tragic shootings. They died because the people in power are failing their constituents. But those people are also dead because of us.
We have the power, and I am demanding the privilege of going to school without the threat of death looming in the corner. I’m urging Mainers to act out. Contact Sens. Collins and King and tell them how much we care about the safety of every citizen in the country.
