James A. Nicholas
PORTLAND – James A. Nicholas “Jay” died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023 with his wife of 57 years, Mary, by his side.
Jay was born to James and Eugenie Nicholas on Jan. 23, 1945 in Methuen, Mass. Alongside his sister, Elizabeth (Nicholas) Plumley, they spent their childhood working on the family farm in West Andover, Mass. where he developed his lifelong traits of hard and honest work. Jay attended Andover High School and was a member of the 1963 graduating class.
The Nicholas farm was a place where all members of this large Lebanese family and friends worked and was often the center of social gatherings. It was at the age of 5 that Jay met his future wife, Mary Akroosh, who lived in Lawrence, Mass. After high school, the two re-acquainted and began a rooted relationship that would last over 60 years and would create what they both wanted most, a family.
Mary and Jay were married on Oct. 9, 1966. Jay started his career in Construction Management before moving to Maine where they raised their children, Elizabeth, James, Jr. and Rachael.
Jay started working for Sheridan Construction Company in 1984 where he would spend the next 35-plus years, leaving his mark on the commercial construction landscape in Maine. From York to Presque Isle, there are countless buildings that Jay built, including many on the Portland waterfront. He always said he loved his work and the challenge of solving problems. When asked what he loved the most about his work he answered “the guys”. He formed many relationships with those he worked for and with over the years. He was proud of what he did and taught by example through his own work ethic.
Jay’s proudest title was Bubby. His first grandchild came in 1996 when DJ Nicholas was born. Jay carved out a relationship with DJ that was unique, special and when Jay first became known as “Bubby”. A few years later came Conor, Emanuella and Elias. Bubby embraced his title and hobby following his grandkids’ activities and sports. He and Mary attended countless games and events and loved weekly dinners with their family. Bubby is best remembered as having a proud smile as he would sit back and take in every minute of the time with each of his grandkids. His family was his world.
He is survived by his wife Mary of 57 years; daughter, Elizabeth and husband Cormac, son, James, Jr. and wife Sarah, his youngest daughter, Rachael; and grandkids DJ, Conor, Emanuella and Elias.
The family would like to thank the staff at 75 State Street and Beacon Hospice for their kindness and care during Bubby’s final days.
A celebration of Jay’s life will be held and announced at a later time.
In lieu of flowers or donations, Jay would want everyone to remember to love those around you, help strangers, focus on solutions, be honest and accountable, work hard and to always do the right thing…even when no one is watching.
