LEWISTON — Central Maine Medical Center’s top official said Thursday all of the victims from Wednesday night’s mass shooting except for one were brought to his hospital for medical treatment.
At a City Hall press conference, Steven G. Littleson, president and chief executive officer of Central Maine Healthcare, said two of those patients were treated and discharged.
One patient was transferred from CMMC to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Three patients died, he said.
Of the eight patients who remain at the hospital, five are in stable condition and three are in critical condition and are being treated in the critical care unit.
At an earlier press conference, authorities said a total of 18 people died in the shooting, including the three that died at the hospital.
Within about 45 minutes to an hour, Littleson said, the hospital had six fully staffed operating rooms running, caring for those who were brought to the hospital.
Medical staff at the hospital, who were operating simultaneously in those six operating rooms, included orthopedic surgeons, general trauma surgeons, neurologists, vascular surgeons, as well as anesthesiologists and support personnel, he said.
“We would like to also express our appreciation for all the support that we received and continue to receive even through today,” he said, from Lewiston officials and law enforcement officers, who continue to provide security at CMMC’s campus.
Other area hospitals supported CMMC’s efforts, he said.
“We needed blood transferred to Central Maine Medical Center very quickly and two of the hospitals, Maine General and St. Mary’s, accommodated us,” he said.
Maine Medical Center in Portland was on standby to accept patients, if needed.
Littleson thanked various “community partners” that provided aid and support, including emergency response personnel, personnel from LifeFlight of Maine and others.
“As one of the counselors said to me before we walked in tonight, ‘You know, often people underestimate our capabilities here to care for people locally.’ I think last night we proved that by working together, we can do just that, under the most trying circumstances,” he said.
