Cumberland voters will decide Nov. 7 whether to allow the Town Council to change its first meeting date after a regular June election when necessary in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

Currently, the town charter mandates that the council meet on the first Monday after an election to swear in newly elected members. The charter  amendment on the local ballot would allow the council to meet and swear in members on the first Monday that is a normal business day after the election.

Town Manager Bill Shane told The Forecaster that the amendment addresses the scheduling problem that arises when the Juneteenth holiday falls on the first Monday after an election. The town charter was written before Juneteenth was an official holiday.
