Joe Osei and Matt Baker combined for over 300 rushing yards and three touchdowns as Cheverus built a 21-point lead and held on to defeat Westbrook, 27-22, in an interclass football game Saturday afternoon at Westbrook.

Baker had touchdown runs of 21 yards in the first quarter and 1 yard in the second quarter to put the Class C Stags (6-1) ahead 14-0 at halftime. Osei then scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter, but just when it appeared Cheverus was in firm control, the Class B Blue Blazes (2-5) roared back within 21-16 on two touchdowns in a nine-second span.

First, Gio Staples hit Dimitri Lubin with a 21-yard TD pass before rushing for the conversion to make it 21-8. Westbrook then recovered an onside kick, and Staples found Aidan Taylor for a 31-yard touchdown on the next play, with Staples again adding a conversion rush.

Gio St. Onge’s 1-yard touchdown run gave Cheverus some breathing room in the fourth quarter. Staples quickly answered with a 1-yard TD, but the Stags recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock.
