I absolutely agree with the Sept. 24 Our View editorial that “birthing unit closures endanger Mainers.” Yes, it requires a comprehensive approach, as it puts pregnant women’s lives in danger. So let’s make it truly comprehensive. But why make reference to what you describe as “anti-choice rhetoric” in 2023 being “at a fever pitch”?

Is the editorial somehow describing the pro-life position as contributing in any way to the closure of Maine’s birthing units? Isn’t this illogical? Can’t we all have the courage to believe the truth? Doesn’t a pregnant woman’s body contain not just one but two bodies? This is a biological fact!

Having a state law that ensures a woman’s right to end her pregnancy during the third trimester does not ensure more births. Could this be one factor in the closing of hospital birthing units? Or, more importantly, does the devaluing of the unborn child devalue the whole concept of the birthing units? Let’s encourage our Legislature to study that possible factor.
