Portland started the second half with an eight-minute scoring drive to extend a one touchdown lead, then added two more scores in the fourth quarter as it went on to a 35-7 victory over Windham in a Class A North football game Friday night at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
The Bulldogs improved to 5-0 and dropped the Eagles to 3-2.
Aidan McGowan’s third touchdown of the game, a 6-yard scamper, capped a 14-play drive and made it 21-7.
Reegan Buck added a 3-yard TD run on the first play of the final quarter, then McGowan broke away for a 21-yard score to put it away.
Portland struck quickly to start the game, forcing a Windham three-and-out on the first series, then Isaak Alkafaji blocked the punt. Eight plays later, McGowan scored his first touchdown – a 2-yard run.
In the second quarter, McGowan scored from the 6 to make it 14-0, but a long punt return from Ezra Foster set the Eagles up deep in Portland territory. Garrett Winslow connected with AJ Moody for a 19-yard score to cut the deficit to 14-7 at halftime.
DEERING 13, FALMOUTH 0: Tavian Lauture passed for one touchdown and scored another to lead the Rams (4-1) over the Navigator (0-5) in Portland.
Lauture passed 26 yards to Santino Cavallaro for a TD with 4:59 remaining in the second quarter, and Christian Silva added the PAT kick to give Deering a 7-0 lead.
Lauture ran off right tackle from the 5 with 2:32 remaining in the game to clinch the win. The score was set up by Joey Foley’s 76-yard run to the Falmouth 9.
Falmouth, playing its first game since a forfeit against Portland because it didn’t have enough healthy players, had its best chance in the second half. After Deering recovered a fumble on the kickoff but then missed a 26-yard field goal, the Navigators controlled the ball for the rest of the third quarter, but gave it back when a receiver slipped on fourth-and-goal from the 10.
THORNTON ACADEMY 41, SANFORD 14: Wyatt Benoit threw a go-ahead touchdown pass with 22 seconds left in the first half, and the Golden Trojans (3-2) scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to pull away from the Spartans (3-1-1) in Sanford.
Mauricio Sunderland had three rushing touchdowns for Thornton, including a 58-yard rumble through traffic in the third quarter. Jackson Paradis and Henry Kenniston each added a TD run.
Brady Boissonneault had a rushing touchdown for Sanford, and Tanner McCann connected with Jordan Bissonnette on a 46-yard scoring toss.
MARSHWOOD 42, MASSABESIC 7: Ryan Essex and Tyler Hussey each rushed for two touchdowns, and the Hawks (3-2) scored 28 points in the second quarter to take control against the Mustangs (1-4) in South Berwick.
Essex opened the scoring with a 22-yard run early in the second quarter, but the conversion failed because of a bad snap. Hussey then sandwiched his two TDs (5 and 6 yards) around a 7-yard scoring run by Landon Waterman, and also rushed for a conversion after his first touchdown.
Graham Goodwin added an 8-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Essex raced 65 yards for the final Marshwood TD in the fourth.
Massabesic avoided a shutout when Cameron Bradbury connected with Cameron Bouchard on a 12-yard touchdown pass.
CAPE ELIZABETH 30, YORK 27: Mike Foley ran for two touchdowns, from 26 and 2 yards, and threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to lead the Capers (1-4) past the Wildcats (2-3) at Cape Elizabeth.
