The Scarborough Little League 11U Boys All-Star Team made waves this summer, leaving their mark on the district tournament with their dedication and teamwork. From handpicked all-star players to memorable wins and a strong sense of community support, this season was a success for the 11U state champions.

The journey began with the selection of the all-star team. Coaches played a pivotal role in identifying the standout talents who would represent Scarborough in the district tournament. The coaches recommend who they believe should be on the all-star team. After a selection process, a meeting with the league’s president concluded with 12 exceptional players earning the privilege of representing their town.

Practice started on June 7, and parents were given a clear message: commitment was non-negotiable. Scarborough Little League had faced issues in the past with players unable to fully dedicate themselves to the team, so this season, a firm commitment was required. The season’s duration was uncertain, ranging from a quick two-week stint to a summer-long commitment. The players, all 11-year-old boys, proved to be fully committed, coachable, and excellent teammates said Coach Mark Shevory.

The coaching staff emphasized teamwork, maximum effort, and positive attitudes throughout the season, nurturing a sense of unity among the players. The boys’ passion for baseball was palpable, evident in their unwavering dedication to the game. Coach Shevory said, “We try to teach them about teamwork, putting in the best effort they can, being a good teammate, being a good listener, staying positive and having a good attitude. Everyone was fully committed, and the kids were awesome and coachable.”

The emotional rollercoaster of competition was intense as described by the coach. Shevory said they had some close games in the district tournament, where a double-elimination format meant that two losses would spell the end of the journey. The season could have gone on for either a few weeks or stretched throughout the entire summer, which was the case for the Scarborough Little League 11U Boys All-Star Team.

They hosted Portland and beat them twice. They had a huge celebration on their own field because they were the host for the district this past year.

Facing strong opponents like Portland and Cumberland, Scarborough demonstrated exceptional pitching and defensive prowess said Shevory. “We had a close game with Cumberland, we beat them 2-1. We had really great pitching and defense,” said coach Mark Shevory. The team triumphed over Portland, twice, and the team celebrated heartily on their home field, as they hosted the district tournament that year. They went to Pine Point Beach for a celebration. The kids jumped in the water and played wiffle ball on the beach.

The players bonded tightly during their remarkable journey, forging relationships that continue to this day. Shevory said that frequent communication through group texts and emails keeps the memories of their incredible summer alive. Shevory said “We saw each other every day, it was like one big family.” He said they all developed a strong bond, and it was “an awesome experience.”

The Scarborough Little League had tremendous support from the community. Parents cheered from the sidelines and assisted with concession stands. A group of dedicated fathers ensured that the playing fields were well-prepped, even in the face of a rainy summer. Rain or shine, the team’s determination was unwavering, “They would have played baseball all day,” said Coach Shevory. Because of the rainy summer, Shevory said, the teAM used indoor batting cages at On Plane Academy in Biddeford and Hitters Count training facility in Saco.

The Scarborough Little League also had the honor of meeting with the Town Council on Sept 20. The council members commended the players for their impeccable behavior, manners, and attentiveness during the meeting.

Looking ahead, the team has its sights set on repeating their success in the upcoming year. With a January travel baseball team on the horizon for some of the players, they are committed to honing their skills from January until August. The team and coaches are looking forward to another season next year.
