Concerning the struggle to curb hate on Zoom by Maine municipal officials (Sept. 24):
Although using Zoom for municipal meetings has great advantages – such as more accessibility, convenience and safety merits (COVID-19) – it also has allowed racist cowards a platform to spew hatred, without consequences for their actions, when they can hack anywhere knowing there is likely no way they will be stopped in the moment.
Maybe municipalities could go back to the good old-fashioned face-to-face meetings with a police officer and a meeting moderator present until we all have the same technological knowledge to keep Zoom meetings fear free, respectful and with all viewpoints heard.
That way, the hackers don’t get to exploit the meeting, incognito, in a cowardly manner, and must be present and wait their turn to speak like everybody else. And anyone can be escorted out by law enforcement when the “freedom of speech” turns into a hatred rant based on no facts with an intention to bully anyone who might disagree.
Maine is not a hate state. I suggest “haters” go somewhere else.
