WESTBROOK – Ute Anna Kathe Hays, born in Berlin, Germany, on July 11, 1941, peacefully passed away on Sept. 15, 2023, in Scarborough with family by her side.

Daughter of Irma and Karl Meyer of Berlin, Germany, Ute grew up with sister Gabriele. Ute bravely escaped from East Berlin on her 18th birthday and immigrated to America in 1963.

When she passed, she went on her own terms, which was important to her and all of us. She will be missed for her strength, humor, and the love she shared.

She is survived by her loving family, husband Charles Hays of Westbrook; her daughter Yvonne Southard of Scarborough, her daughter Ute Lestage of Scarborough; and her beloved grandson, Jeremy Lestage and wife Liza Lestage of Gorham.

A burial service to honor Ute’s life will take place at 11 a.m. on Sept. 27 at the Woodlawn Cemetery, 380 Stroudwater St., Westbrook, where she will be laid to rest.

This occasion will provide an opportunity for family and friends to come together, pay their respects, and celebrate the remarkable journey of a woman who touched our lives in profound ways. May she rest in peace, free and at ease, just as she wished. Our family will be forever grateful to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
