SACO — When the deadline for nominations papers for local candidates to run in the November election ended on Sept. 8, Jodi MacPhail was the only person who qualified to run for mayor of Saco.
“Being the only name on the ballot shows that the residents of Saco have great faith in my ability to lead this community in which I was raised and have always called home,” MacPhail said in an email.
The current deputy mayor, MacPhail, is a two-term member of the Saco City Council. She is council liaison to the Economic Development Commission, the Saco Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Dyer Library Board of Trustees. MacPhail volunteers with downtown revitalization organization Saco Main Street and the United Baptist Church. She is a lifetime Saco resident and a graduate of Thornton Academy high school.
“As mayor,” MacPhail said she promises “a full summary and reasoning behind all mayoral appointments to boards and commissions, to work to promote the City of Saco as well as working with other surrounding communities, and most importantly to work with Saco residents on their concerns and be a true liaison between the public and city government.”
“I will be working alongside Economic Development, the Chamber of Commerce and more to bring in appropriate businesses that will fit in with the character of our community for both our residents and visitors, again in a responsible way that enhances what we already have and has a net positive impact on the community,” she said.
MacPhail prides herself on being approachable. “The biggest challenge we face as a community is bringing both truth and trust between local government and our residents,” she said. “As a councilor, residents know they can always reach out to me and that will not change as mayor.”
If elected, MacPhail said she will make history in Saco as the city’s first female mayor.
