‘The Hip Hopera of 5P1N0K10’
7 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Mayo Street Arts, 10 Mayo St., Portland, $15, $22 preferred seating. mayostreetarts.org
“The Hip Hopera of 5P1NoK10” is like no other show you’ve seen involving puppetry. The production uses music, videos and found-object marionettes to recast the tale of Pinocchio as an Afrofururist in a story about a robot in a post-apocalyptic time who hopes to become a real boy. Along the way, 5P1NoK10 faces racism, oppression and police violence. It’s all from the mind of puppeteer Jeghetto, and his sons Tarin and Divine. At 5 p.m. Sunday, there will be a free puppeteer’s happy hour where Jeghetto, who has worked with Pharrell Williams and Missy Elliot among others, will speak about how he creates and animates his unique puppets.
