Three people died in the span of 6½ hours Friday in separate incidents in New Hampshire waters, authorities said.
New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol and other agencies responded to three different calls Friday in Gilmanton, Manchester and Madison, according to a news release from the New Hampshire State Police.
At about 2:15 p.m., a boating accident was reported involving a child out of a boat on Manning Lake in Gilmanton. An investigation revealed that the boy was part of a group of Boy Scouts from out of state, and was involved in a boating accident while out of the water. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
A representative from the Boy Scouts of America confirmed to WMUR-TV in New Hampshire that the boy was from Lexington, Massachusetts.
“We are heartbroken to confirm the death of a Scout … following a tragic accident on Manning Lake in Gilmanton,” the Boy Scouts of America’s Daniel Webster Council in New Hampshire said in a statement. “We offer our deepest condolences to the Scout’s family and ask everyone to please join in keeping this young man and his loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Before police cleared the scene in Gilmanton, Marine Patrol received a call of a body found on the Piscataquog River in Manchester. The body was found by boaters, who called the Manchester Police Department. Police were still working to identify the victim.
And at about 8:45 p.m. Friday, a third call came in of a possible drowning on Middle Pea Porridge Pond in Madison. A swimmer was reported as having failed to return to her family after being in the water in front of their rental property. Family and neighbors searched for her and called first responders. An investigation revealed that Amy Posocco, 41, of Beverly, Massaschusetts, had been swimming with family members but failed to return to shore.
Posocco’s body was found about 90 feet offshore. The investigation is ongoing, and her immediate cause of death is not known but is considered to be accidental, New Hampshire State Police said.
