Andrew Cheever scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning and earned the victory in relief as No. 2 Yarmouth rallied to beat 10th-seeded Leavitt, 2-1, in a Class B South baseball quarterfinal Thursday afternoon in Yarmouth.
Yarmouth (12-5) will host sixth-seeded Greely in Saturday’s semifinal round.
Clippers starter Liam Hickey and Leavitt starter Will Keach matched zeroes for five innings, before Leavitt (9-9) took the lead in the top of the sixth when Keach scored on a throwing error.
In the bottom half, Jack Janczuk hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Jonny Cody.
After stranding the potential go-ahead run at third in the top of the seventh, Cheever drew a walk from reliever Colton Taylor in the bottom of the seventh. He stole second and went to third on a flyout, then raced home on a pitch in the dirt that got away.
Keach had two hits for the Hornets.
GREELY 9, WELLS 2: Marky Axelsen had four hits and two RBI, and Sam Almy pitched a five-hitter to lead the sixth-seeded Rangers (11-7) past the third-seeded Warriors (11-6) in a Class B South quarterfinal at Wells.
Cam Irish chipped in with two hits and three RBI. Ethan Robeck added an RBI single.
CAPE ELIZABETH 4, MORSE 0: Curtis Sullivan pitched a two-hitter as the top-seeded Capers (14-3) won a Class B South quarterfinal in Cape Elizabeth.
Sullivan struck out six and walked none.
Jimmy Hollowell had two hits for Cape Elizabeth, which scored three runs in the second inning and one in the sixth. Charles Song contributed a hit and a walk.
Jason Bussey got both hits for eighth-seeded Morse (9-9).
SOUTH PORTLAND 8, KENNEBUNK 0: Andrew Heffernan struck out 12, pitching a two-hitter and leading the second-seeded Red Riots (14-3) past the No. 10 Rams (10-8) in a Class A South quarterfinal at South Portland.
George Lazos broke up Heffernan’s no-hit bid with a two out single in the fifth inning.
Nick Swain had three hits and an RBI, Heffernan scored three times, and Nolan Hobbs and Richie Gilboy chipped in with two hits apiece while combining for three RBI.
The Red Riots host No. 6 Marshwood on Saturday.
WAYNFLETE/NYA 9, MT. ABRAM 6: Tanner Anctil and Cal Nice each had three hits, including a home run, and the fourth-seeded Flyers (14-3) beat the No. 5 Roadrunners (13-5) in a Class C South quarterfinal in Portland.
Waynflete/NYA will face No. 1 Sacopee Valley in the semifinals on Saturday.
Anctil also scored three runs, while Nice had four RBI and scored twice. Cole Lambert got the pitching victory. Cooper St. Hilaire pitched two innings of relief, and Daxton St. Hilaire earned the save.
Payton Mitchell scored twice for Mt. Abram. Logan Dube took the loss.
SACOPEE VALLEY 12, HALL-DALE 0: Carson Black and Grady Cummings combined on a one-hitter as the top-seeded Hawks (17-0) beat the ninth-seeded Bulldogs (7-11) in five innings in a Class C South quarterfinal at Hiram.
Caleb Vacchiano put the 10-run rule into effect with a three-run homer in the fifth.
Black struck out eight in 3 2/3 hitless innings, and Cummings allowed one hit while striking out three.
SOFTBALL
WINDHAM 5, THORNTON ACADEMY 0: Brooke Gerry threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the second-seeded Eagles (15-2) as they shut out the seventh-seeded Golden Trojans (10-8) in a Class A South quarterfinal at Windham.
Stella Jarvis was 4 for 4 for Windham, which took the lead with a four-run fourth inning. Kennedy Kimball added a pair of hits.
Renee Gonneville got the only hit for Thornton.
BIDDEFORD 11, CHEVERUS 6: Laura Perreault hit an RBI single and a grand slam during 10-run third inning that propelled the top-ranked Tigers (16-1) past the ninth-seeded Stags (9-9) in a Class A South quarterfinal at Biddeford.
Eliza Doyon and Hannah Lappin also collected two hits apiece.
Madison Bunnell-Parker and Hailey Lamontagne each hit a single and a double, and Ashley Connor belted a triple for Cheverus.
YORK 14, WELLS 4: Winning pitcher McKayla Kortes belted a three-run homer, Maddie Fitzgerald hit two doubles, and the top-seeded Wildcats (16-1) beat the ninth-seeded Warriors (11-7) in five innings in a Class B South quarterfinal at York.
Maddy Raymond and Ella Moon each drove in two runs for York.
MONMOUTH ACADEMY 10, SACOPEE VALLEY 1: Winning pitcher Brooklyn Federico’s two-run double keyed a five-run fifth inning as the top-seeded Mustangs (16-1) broke a 1-1 tie in a Class C South quarterfinal win over the ninth-seeded Hawks (9-9) in Monmouth.
The Mustangs added four runs in the sixth as they advanced to face No. 4 Spruce Mountain on Saturday.
Shanna Parsons, Bella Lyons and Grace Levesque also doubled. Federico, Parsons, Rileigh Chase, Maddie Herr and June Foyt all collected two hits.
Federico allowed just two hits and held the Hawks scoreless after the first inning.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
GREELY 15, MT. BLUE 2: Charlotte Taylor recorded three goals and three assists as the top-seeded Rangers (13-2) cruised past the No. 8 Cougars (8-7) in a Class B quarterfinal at Cumberland.
Lauren Dennen added two goals and two assists, and Allie Read and Asja Kelman also scored twice.
Maddie Keller and Lily Huntley scored for Mt. Blue.
