SACO – Steven T. Nelson, 78, of Saco, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, after a long illness. Steve was born on June 14, 1944, in Chicago to Dorothy and Theodore Schoonmaker. His mother then married Alan Nelson, and Steve grew up in Belmont. He graduated from Belmont High School in 1962 and moved to NYC to work in radio at Fordham University. He continued to work in broadcasting and landed a position at CBS News in Washington, D.C. He covered Presidents Ford through Bush Sr., and was present at many historic events including the Camp David Accords in 1978, the night Bobby Kennedy was shot, and a plane crash in Brazil in 1982 in which he was one of the survivors. Steve went on to work for Telecast Technology Corp., specializing in fiberoptic cables for TV production. He won National Sports Emmys on three occasions. Steve grew up playing hockey as a goalie and continued on the ice for many years. Steve had a love of all things electronic and developed a love of wine during the time he spent in California covering the Reagan presidency. He also loved target shooting and had a one-liner joke to drop in every conversation he had.

Steve is survived by his wife Ann Lane-Nelson of 29 years, his children Mark S. Nelson of Frederick, Md., Pamela J. Maddox and her husband Brian of Savannah, Ga., and Pamela’s daughter Samantha Nelson of Gaithersburg, Md.; his brothers Peter K. Nelson of Dracut, Mass., and Michael A. Nelson of Dalton, Mass. Steve was also affectionately known as “BEAR” to Ann’s sons and their families, including Peter and Deb Lane of St. Paul, Minn., and their daughter Rachel; Greg and Holly Lane of Gorham, and their sons Parker and Calvin, Parker’s wife Lydia and their daughter Laurel; Brent and Kristen Lane of Saco, and their daughter Gretchen; John and Catherine Lane of North Yarmouth, and their children Sam, Will, Adam and Acadia.

A service will be held June 17, at 9 a.m., at United Baptist Church in Saco.
