Select Board candidate forum
Peter Bragdon and Colleen Strickler are vying for one open seat on the New Gloucester Select Board. Come hear directly from them at a candidate forum at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the Meeting House, 389 Intervale Road.
The moderated forum, organized by the New Gloucester Candidate/Referendum Issues Committee, will include an opportunity for questions from the audience. It also will be televised live on local access NGTV Channel 3 and livestreamed at cloud.castus.tv/vod/ngtv. After, it will be available as video-on-demand at newgloucester.com.
The town election takes place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 13 at the New Gloucester Fire-Rescue building, 611 Lewiston Road.

Fiddlehead foraging
A two-hour hike with outdoor recreation staff from Pineland Farms will take participants on a fiddlehead foraging hike to the banks of the Royal River on May 26.
The adults-only hike starts at 6 p.m. and the fee is $45 per person. A harvest bag, a quart of fresh picked fiddleheads and a recipe is included in the price of the fee. Hikers should wear comfortable hiking boots, insect repellant and attire appropriate for the weather that day.

Book and bake sale
The Friends of the New Gloucester Public Library will hold its spring book and bake sale from noon to 3 p.m. June 4. Members of the Friends group are invited to a preview sale that morning from 11 a.m. to noon.

The Friends book sale represents a cherished tradition in New Gloucester that may have begun as early as 1960, when discarded books were sold at the library to as a fundraiser. At the modern-day book and bake sale, community members assemble to visit and nibble on homemade goodies while browsing the selections to get a jump on summer reading plans.
The public is invited to donate books to the sale. Of particular interest are children’s books, and adult fiction and non-fiction; Reader’s Digest Condensed books, encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, VHS tapes, DVDs and CDs will not be accepted. Donors are asked to limit contributions to two cartons or four grocery-sized bags and drop them off at the library during open hours. Library staff will not be able to assist with unloading and containers will not be returned. All materials should be clean and free of odors, mold and mildew.
Park passes have arrived
The New Gloucester Public Library now has park passes available, including passes for the Maine Wildlife Park, Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine and state parks. Call ahead to reserve passes at 926-4840 or email newgloucesterlibrary@gmail.com. The passes are courtesy of the Friends of the Library and the Royal River Conservation Trust.
