I’m a gun owner and had to read a recent letter twice (“Letter to the editor: Arming school staff is a wise safety strategy,” May 10). “Stunned” falls woefully short of my reaction.
Training? Teachers will not go through training like police officers or practice regularly to achieve proficiency. They will not be required to participate in systematic refresher training. Lack of qualified trainers, facilities, funds and effective oversight make safe implementation impossible.
To believe that a “gun safety” course or anything less than professional training would contribute to a safer environment in schools is fantasy. Charitably, it’s an emotional response not grounded in facts, research or logic. Gun manufacturers and the National Rifle Association are applauding as they disgracefully deal in fear.
Do we really want our children taught by armed teachers and coaches every day through 12th grade? Do you believe that makes children feel safer? Stop the insanity.
More guns are not a deterrent. Crying for stronger mental health care or red flag laws is a Band-Aid on a ruptured artery. We need far stricter gun laws, to hold gun manufacturers liable and even parents of underage shooters. Ban assault rifles and ammunition, bump stocks, transformers, banana clips (ghost guns and silencers, too). They were all designed to quickly kill as many people as possible, not target shooting or deer hunting.
Next, someone will propose that “militias” patrol school hallways. Enough already!
