Regarding the recent opinion piece by Rep. Chellie Pingree about the Supreme Court (“Corrupt Supreme Court must be reformed,” May 8):
I do agree that justices should have a consistent code of ethics. However, I do not understand the rest of the column because it does not align with my understanding of the structure of government our founding members envisioned.
When Rep. Pingree writes, “New justices will bring fresh perspectives to reinvigorate the Constitution,” I can’t help but think that she has it backward. Her job, the job of the Senate and Congress, is to reinvigorate the Constitution, if the voting body who placed her in her position so choose.
The job of the Supreme Court justice is to uphold our existing Constitution, not reinvigorate it nor reinvent it. I do not support these ideas and will not be voting for her in future elections. We have checks and balances built into our system of government for a reason. My concern is that our representatives are trying to overstep their bounds.
