ETHAN SCHULZ, Senior – Swimming

Schulz was the best swimmer in the state on the best team in Class A and he capped his high school career in dominant style.

Schulz made an immediate splash in high school.

As a freshman, he was the Class A champion in the 200 freestyle and placed runner-up in the 100 butterfly. After he essentially lost his sophomore season to COVID, Schulz captured both the 100 and 200 free as a junior, helping Scarborough win a title for the first time.

This winter, Schulz dominated everyone from start to finish. He was especially transcendent  during the postseason, winning the 50 free and 100 fly at Southwesterns, then helping the Red Storm repeat as Class A state champion by capturing the 100 free (46.74 seconds) and 200 free (1 minute, 41.9 seconds). Schulz’s 200 free time was the fifth-best in state history. His 100 free time was the fastest in the state this season.

“Everything I had, everything these boys (on deck) had, everything those boys (across the pool) had, I was just proud of everyone, of all the work they put in,” said Schulz.

Schulz will now turn his attention to competing in college, at Grand Valley State University, located just west of Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he plans to major in mechanical engineering.

Ethan Schulz, Scarborough’s Winter Athlete of the Year, knew that much was expected of him this season and he delivered. His ability to leave the opposition in his wake was never in doubt.

Coach Morgan Royle’s comment: “Ethan has been an asset to the team in so many ways. His athletic prowess helped bring the boys’ team two state championships and his leadership has been something his teammates have been able to look up to. I have had the privilege to coach Ethan for his senior year and get to know him as an athlete and as the genuinely great person he is. The other swimmers on the team looked up to him and he was always willing to help teach and pass on his knowledge and passion of swimming. Ethan is honestly one of the hardest-working yet most humble athletes I have ever coached. He puts his entire self into everything he does and I have no doubt he will be successful in anything he chooses to do with his future.”

CAROLINE HARTLEY, Junior – Basketball

When Scarborough’s girls’ basketball was struggling early in the season, it needed someone to step up and take charge.

Hartley did so, proved once and for all that she’s a unique talent and as a result, the Red Storm caught fire and made it all the way to the regional semifinals.

Hartley came naturally to the sport, as her grandfather is the legendary Hall of Fame coach Dick Whitmore (who is now a Scarborough assistant).

She barely got to play her freshman year, as COVID limited the Red Storm to just four games, but as a sophomore, Hartley made the SMAA All-Rookie team, playing a key role for a squad which got all the way to the Class AA South Final.

This winter, Hartley led the region in scoring with 19.5 points per game and also had 7.9 rebounds and 2.5 steals per contest.

Highlights included 17 points in a season opening win over Sanford, 14 points in a victory over Bonny Eagle, 15 points in an overtime loss to Bonny Eagle, 17 points in a loss to top-ranked Thornton Academy, 21 points in a win at South Portland, a career-high 32 points in a narrow loss to eventual regional champion Gorham, 25 points in a second victory over Sanford, 22 points in a third win over Sanford, 23 points in a victory over Noble and 29 in an overtime loss to Deering.

In the tournament, Scarborough upset South Portland in the quarterfinals, as Hartley led the way with 18 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots. The Red Storm were eliminated by Thornton Academy in the semifinals, but Hartley did all she could to extend the season, scoring 25 points.

Nothing will come easily next year, as she figures to be the focal point of every defense she faces, but Caroline Hartley, Scarborough’s Winter Athlete of the Year, continues to elevate her game and her senior season promises to be memorable.

Coach Mike Giordano’s comment: “Caroline matured right in front of our eyes. She makes good decisions with the ball. She did a great job for us. She had a breakout year offensively. I feel she’s one of the most talented players in the league. Caroline took her game to a different level this year. Her getting stronger during the offseason was a tremendous help. A double threat offensively, she can shoot the 3 consistently and her ability to get to the rim made her almost impossible to stop. A captain as a junior, she was a great leader for our very young group.”
