LOGAN SCHWARTZ, Junior – Alpine skiing

Schwartz was already great entering the season.

And then, he became unbeatable.

Schwartz, whose older sister, Dana, was our Cape Elizabeth Winter Athlete of the Year last year, started skiing at the age of five and after his freshman season was limited by COVID restrictions, he finished second in Class B in the giant slalom and seventh in the slalom at last year’s state meet.

As a junior, Schwartz finished first in every high school race.

He was at his best in the biggest meets. At states, he helped the Capers come in second as a team by winning both the slalom (with a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 8.37 seconds) and the GS (1:20.77).

“In the offseason, I spent a lot of time in the gym focusing on agility and strength,” Schwartz said. “Last year went well and I wanted to do well again this year.”

Schwartz, who also sprints in outdoor track, went on to place second at the Eastern High School championship meet in New Hampshire. He hopes to move up to the top spot next year while remaining the top skier in Class B. He then plans to ski in college and should have several interested schools.

Logan Schwartz, Cape Elizabeth’s Winter Athlete of the Year, has set the bar as the latest in a long line of Capers stars on the slopes. His final season at the high school level promises to be memorable and triumphant.

Coach Sarah Plummer’s comment: “Logan is both a committed athlete and student. In addition, he’s a wonderful, genuine and helpful person with a great sense of humor and attitude. In racing, he is extremely focused and disciplined and worked extremely hard to prepare for the season. As a co-captain this year, he stepped up to help with leadership tasks and shared his knowledge and love of the sport with his teammates. He is responsive and always willing to pitch in and help out. I am really proud of Logan’s accomplishments this season and so grateful to know him as a person as well.”

Mahoney has lived up to her family’s name and taken the legacy up a notch as she won a pair of state titles this winter and is primed to lead the Capers to even more glory next year.

Mahoney started competing at the age of 5, following in the footsteps of her older sisters, Caroline (Cape Elizabeth’s 2020 Winter Athlete of the Year) and Maddie.

“I’ve been chasing my sisters since I was little,” said Cookie Mahoney. “They both won championships and coming into high school, I wanted to accomplish that too.”

After her freshman campaign was limited by COVID restrictions, Mahoney became a state champion as an individual and with her team as a sophomore, winning the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 56.3 seconds and the 100 free (53.51 seconds), while also anchoring a champion 400 freestyle relay squad.

This season, Mahoney teamed with another sister, Hadley Mahoney, and kept the good times rolling. She led the Capers to another Class B championship by placing first in the 200 individual medley (2:06.74), as well as the 100 free (53.17), and she also anchored the winning 400 free relay, which posted the fourth-best time in state history (3:38.17).

“We have a really good group of girls that pushes each other,” said Mahoney. “Swimming is an individual sport, but you can’t (win) without your teammates.”

Mahoney hopes to swim at the Division I level in college and she’ll have many schools interested in her. First, she looks to dominate the Maine high school girls’ scene one final time.

Cookie Mahoney, Cape Elizabeth’s Winter Athlete of the Year, excels in the pool and her joy is palpable and contagious.

Coach Ben Raymond’s comment: “I have been really lucky to work with Cookie over the past three years. She is an outstanding swimmer and loves to compete. Cookie has an outstanding attitude and not only pushes herself in training each day, but she also pushes her teammates and continually raises the competitive level of practice each and every day. Cookie loves being challenged in practices which pushes me to be a more creative coach which has a positive influence on the entire program. I am really proud of her and excited for her senior season.”
