Campbell Cassidy, Edward Little senior forward: A finalist for the Travis Roy Award, Cassidy led the Red Eddies with 22 goals and 29 assists. He scored at least one point in each regular-season game. Cassidy plans to attend Merrimack College, where he’ll study health science and play baseball.
Phil Coupe, Cape Elizabeth senior defense: One of the top two-way defensemen in Class B, Coupe was a vital player as the Capers made a run to their first state championship since 2006. With nine goals and 25 assists, he was one of Cape Elizabeth’s top offensive threats. Coupe is undecided on his college plans. Boston College and Colgate are among the schools he is considering.
Bryce Crowell, Messalonksee senior forward: Crowell had 21 goals and 20 assists to help the Eagles win 18 games and reach the Class B state championship game for the first time in eight years. Crowell scored three goals in the North regional and got at least one goal in eight of Messalonskee’s final 10 games. He plans to attend Maine Maritime Academy, where he’ll play lacrosse.
Richie Gilboy, South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete senior defense: One of the top defensemen in Class A, Gilboy was a semifinalist for the Travis Roy Award. A strong, physical presence, Gilboy had 10 goals and 17 assists for the Red Riots, leading the team to its first Class A state championship game. Gilboy plans to attend St. Michael’s College, where he’ll join the baseball team.
Mitch Ham, Falmouth senior forward: Ham, who won the Travis Roy Award as the top senior in Class A boys’ hockey, combined with teammate Aaron Higgins to form the most dangerous scoring tandem in the state. Ham had 24 goals and 42 assists this winter, and racked up 107 points over his final two seasons with the Navigators. He will attend Colby College, where he plans to join the golf team and play for the club hockey squad.
Aaron Higgins, Falmouth senior forward: Higgins recorded four hat tricks and scored at least two goals in seven other games this season, finishing with 33 goals and 34 assists. He and teammate Mitch Ham were the top two scorers in the state, helping Falmouth to a 17-game winning streak. Higgins, a finalist for the Travis Roy Award, plans to play club hockey at Liberty University.
Lucas Hubbard, Thornton Academy senior defense: The Trojans’ captain, Hubbard was a steady presence on the blueline as Thornton Academy won its first Class A state title since 2012. A finalist for the Travis Roy Award, Hubbard had four goals and 17 assists this season, including a pair of assists in the state championship game. He’ll attend Southern Maine Community College next year.
Nick Laughlin, Cape Elizabeth senior defense: The Varsity Maine Player of the Year, Laughlin led the Capers in scoring with 17 goals and 19 assists. He scored two goals and assisted on another in the Class B state championship game, helping Cape Elizabeth win its first title in 17 years. Also a Varsity Maine All-State selection in football, Laughlin will play football next season at the University of Maine.
Luke Patterson, Brunswick senior goalie: Patterson was a standout in net for the Dragons, boasting a .927 save percentage and 1.82 goals-against average. He posted one solo shutout while combining for another, and allowed just one goal in nine other games. Patterson placed fourth in the triple jump at the Class A track and field championships last spring, and plans to continue his track and field career at the University of Maine.
Jamie Sperlich, Biddeford/Old Orchard Beach/Massabesic senior defense: A repeat Varsity Maine All-State selection, Sperlich was a finalist for the Travis Roy Award. Sperlich had nine goals and nine assists this season, and he led the team in blocked shots. Sperlich plans to attend the University of Southern Maine and study finance.
Carter Walls, John Bapst junior forward: With 37 goals and 21 assists, Walls was the top scorer in Class B. He recorded nine hat tricks in leading the Crusaders to a 15-win season. Walls scored at least five points in a game seven times this season, and scored or assisted on just over half of his team’s goals/
AJ Wolverton, Brunswick senior forward: Wolverton led the Dragons with 21 goals and 19 assists to earn KVAC Player of the Year honors. He collected at least one point in 18 of the 19 games he played, helping Brunswick to a 15-2-2 record. Over his final two seasons with the Dragons, Wolverton had 62 points.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Joe Robinson, South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete: Robinson led the Red Riots to the Class A state championship game for the first time in program history. The South Portland co-op team advanced to the state final by executing the biggest upset of the season, a 5-1 regional semifinal win over a Falmouth team riding a 17-game winning streak.
