What’s in a name? Sometimes not much. Other times, it’s a clue to the function of an item: “watering can,” “potato masher” and “paintbrush” come easily to mind. Then there’s “assault rifle,” an ominous name that portends harm and destruction. It’s a very different name than “hunting rifle.”
While I am aware that banning assault rifles will not fix a terrible national problem, where guns were the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. in 2020 and 2021, there is absolutely no reason not to take this step. It would not in any way impinge on people’s ability to hunt, enjoy target practice or protect family and property.
Data shows clearly that the majority of Americans favor the banning of assault weapons. We must take this step toward sane gun laws, trusting that the next step will then be clearer. The names “writer,” “protester” and “voter” can apply to us, powerful names for us all.
