Mfiondu Kabengele had 30 points and 10 rebounds as the Maine Celtics beat the Eastern Conference-leading Long Island Nets 121-112 in an NBA G League game Sunday at the Portland Expo.
The loss ended the Nets’ 16-game winning streak. Maine has five games remaining in the regular season, starting with games in Wisconsin on Wednesday and Friday.
Kamar Baldwin added 25 points and 16 rebounds for Maine (16-11). Tony Snell added 24 points and eight rebounds, Luka Samanic had 12 points and 10 rebounds and A.J. Reeves had 12 points.
RaiQuan Gray had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Long Island (22-4). Jordan Bowden added 20 points, and Alondes Williams had 16 points and nine rebounds.
HOCKEY
ECHL: Brent Beaudoin’s second goal of the game came on the power play with 3:45 left in the third period and gave the Worcester Railers a 4-3 win over the Maine Mariners at Worcester, Massachusetts.
Chase Zieky scored two goals for Maine, which has lost three straight. Marc-Olivier Duquette also scored for the Mariners.
Chris Ordoobadi and Anthony Repuci had Worcester’s other goals.
SKIING
MEN’S WORLD CUP: Olympic champion Marco Odermatt capped what he called “a perfect season” by securing his second straight World Cup title in giant slalom at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.
The Swiss skier won the penultimate GS of the season, beating his only rival for the GS title before the race, Henrik Kristoffersen, by 0.32 seconds.
Odermatt extended his lead over the Norwegian to 160 points in the GS standings, locking up the title with only 100 points still at stake at the season-ending race next Saturday.
GOLF
EUROPEAN TOUR: Jorge Campillo held onto his overnight lead to win the DP World Tour’s Kenya Open by two shots with a 5-under 66 at Nairobi, Kenya.
Campillo put together six birdies and dropped just one shot in the final round at Muthaiga Golf Club to go 18-under overall and stay ahead of Japan’s Masahiro Kawamura.
Campillo claimed his third tour title and first since the 2020 Qatar Masters.
TENNIS
BNP PARIBAS OPEN: Qualifier Cristian Garin of Chile shocked third-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway 6-4, 7-6 (2) at Indian Wells, California, for his first win over a top-five player in nearly two years.
Garin will face either 13th-seeded Karen Khachanov or 23rd-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the round of 16.
Cameron Norrie, the 2021 Indian Wells champion, rallied from a set and 3-0 down to defeat world No. 103 Taro Daniel 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-2. .
Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who missed the second half of the 2022 season after tearing three ligaments in his right ankle at the French Open, beat Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. He will face either No. 5-seeded Daniil Medvedev or Ilya Ivashka.
Top American woman Jessica Pegula, the No. 3 seed, rallied from a set down for the second consecutive match to beat 26th-seeded Anastasia Potapova 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Seventh-seeded Maria Sakkari beat No. 27 Anhelina Kalinina 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The Greek player will face either Karolina Pliskova or Veronika Kudermetova in the round of 16.
Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann backed up her second-round upset of ninth-seeded Belinda Bencic with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson to reach the round of 16 for the first time.
