It is high time to stop making excuses for those who put others in harm’s way by refusing to accept responsibility and obey the law. There is a proposal in the Legislature to substantially increase the fines for distracted driving. I understand there are always two sides to any issue, but I recently heard the argument that a $500 fine would be “way overboard,” especially for a low-income driver.
So, if a low-income driver hit and killed a pedestrian while driving distracted, would that not cause some “way overboard” difficulty for the pedestrian’s family?
Whatever one’s level of income, or type of vehicle one drives, driving is a huge responsibility. We need to stop making excuses and hold all drivers responsible. If you cannot afford a $500 fine, put the phone down.
