The Scarborough Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) temporarily closed on Feb. 8 after the extreme cold on the weekend of Feb. 3-5.
The cold caused a roof drain above the ceiling of the office to break. As a result, water was “cascading into the interior of the branch,” according to a press release. The staff made sure that people and electronics were safely relocated to protect them from leaks.
Repairs are underway, though the branch will be closed at least through Feb. 15.
“The health and safety of our customers and staff are of course our priority,” said Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. “Other than staff working to get the Scarborough branch ready to serve customers again, our branch staff have been temporarily reassigned to other local branches, where they stand ready to serve the public.”
Other local branches of the BMV are open in areas such as in Portland, Topsham, Kennebunkport, and Springvale.
