South Portland and Scarborough are ringing in the holiday season with public events over the next two weekends.

South Portland will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony on Friday, Dec. 2. Festivities kick off at 4:30 p.m. in Mill Creek Park, including horse-drawn wagon rides, performances from South Portland students and selfies with Santa. The switch will be flipped for the tree lighting at 6 p.m. The South Portland Food Cupboard will be accepting non-perishable food donations and the South Portland Toy Drive will have a drop-box available near Santa.

The Knightville Holiday Stroll, featuring entertainment and special offerings from local businesses, is scheduled for noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

On Dec. 10, the South Portland Parks and Recreation Department will host Breakfast With Santa at the Community Center from 8-10 a.m. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausages, fruit cocktails and beverages. Tickets are $10 per person; children under 3 are free. All proceeds will go to the South Portland Police Department’s Volunteers in Police Service program. A holiday craft fair will also be held Dec. 10 in the South Portland High School cafeteria. Running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event will feature 30 local crafters, a kids’ make-and-take table, baked goods, raffles and more.

Scarborough kicks off the weekend with gingerbread house decorating from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at the Community Services Hub on Payne Road. Families can buy a pre-assembled gingerbread house for $20 and choose from a variety of decorations to deck it out. Refreshments will be provided and other crafts projects will be available.

Scarborough Community Services will also host Santa in the Park on Saturday, Dec. 3. Families will drive a planned route through the school campus and greet Santa and Mrs. Claus and their elves. The Scarborough Rotary Club will accept non-perishable food items along the route for the Scarborough Food Pantry. The event begins at 6 p.m. at Memorial Park.
