Veterans Day speaker will be town’s police chief
In honor of Veterans Day, the Scarborough Kiwanis Club will host a talk with Scarborough Police Chief Mark Holmquist from noon to 1 p.m. Friday as part of its monthly meetings at Cowbell Burger, 185 U.S. Route 1.
Holmquist will speak about his service as a U.S. Marine and his assignment guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Meetings are always free and open to the public.

Dodgeball tournament set for Sunday
The South Portland High School senior class will host the 2nd Annual Dodgeball Tournament from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the high school’s Beal Gymnasium, 637 Highland Ave.
Middle school and high school students as well as adults are welcome to play on teams of 5 players each with two alternates allowed. Cost is $10 per player or $50 per team.

Talk by Tom Doak on climate change impacts on forests
Saco Valley Land Trust and Scarborough Land Trust will co-sponsor a presentation by Tom Doak, executive director of Maine Woodland Owners, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Deering Room at the Dyer Library, 317 Main St.
The talk will focus on the impacts of climate change to Maine’s forests and what can be done to protect and improve forested lands for the future. A Q&A will follow.
Doak recently served on the Maine Forest Carbon Task Force, which aimed to encourage carbon sequestration in smaller forests across the state.

Reception Thursday for museum’s newest exhibition
An Artists & Museum Members Reception is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday for the Brick Store Museum’s newest exhibition, “The Great State of Illustration in Maine,” 117 Main St.
The exhibit features over 80 historic and contemporary illustrators who call Maine home. The display is now on view through February 2023.
Illustrator visits and programming will be announced on the Brick Store Museum’s website, brickstoremuseum.org, starting with a visit by Matt Tavares on Nov. 26.
This exhibit was curated by Illustration Institute, based in Portland, which works to raise audience appreciation of illustration in its many forms.
PORTLAND
Friends of Casco Bay rebooting film festival
Friends of Casco Bay is rebooting their film festival as a Cinematic Celebration in support of their mission to improve and protect the health of Casco Bay. The event will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday online and in person at the University of Southern Maine’s Abromson Center, 88 Bedford St.
The celebration is a hybrid event featuring 12 environmental films, curated by Maine Outdoor Film Festival. Many of the screenings are based in New England and include topics such as running a maple sugar shack in Bethel, hiking the Appalachian Trail at age 83, and restoring fish passage around historic dams on Cobbossee Stream in Maine.
The final and longest film of the event tells a story of resistance to Arctic oil drilling in the Refuge and Yukon Flats along the Yukon River, that threatens indigenous communities’ ways of life, food security, and identities.
Snacks, a cash bar, and a raffle all will be available. All event proceeds support Friends of Casco Bay.
Advance tickets are $30 and can be purchased at cascobay.org/cinematic-celebration. Tickets will be sold at the door the day of the event for $35.
WELLS
Chamber to host 5K Veterans Day run on Saturday
The Wells Chamber of Commerce will host their 9th Annual Veterans Day 5K beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. The 5K run/walk will start and end at the Wells Elks Lodge, at 356 Bald Hill Road.
Advance registration, by Thursday, is $20 for adults and $15 for ages 11-17, with an additional $5 fee after Friday. Children ages 10 and under participate for free. The first 100 registrants will receive a free long-sleeve T-shirt. The Wells Elks will have food and beverages for sale after the race (bring your ID). Proceeds for this event will benefit Honor Flight Maine.
