What a great idea Doug Zlatin presented in his proposal for a weekly opinion column (“Letter to the editor: Share differing opinions while maintaining respectful dialogue,” Oct. 19) where folks submit opinions coupled with constructive ideas on selected topics. He was right in expressing the need for us to have a designated place where diverse ideas can flow for listening ears.

This December will mark three years since the passing of Portland’s contributing columnist Rabbi Harry Sky. I miss and thoroughly enjoyed his “Reflections” columns, where I was always touched, whether in a humorous, poignant or thought-provoking way. When I happened to think of him a few weeks back, I mused about how nice it would be for the Portland Press Herald to re-run selected columns of his in a new section, perhaps called “I Believe In Yesterday,” where dusted-off opinion pieces from prominent local and national writers are visited for their positive impact on society’s readers.

I believe Doug Zlatin’s idea for the Press Herald’s readers to have a regular forum for civil expression, coupled with past inspirational columns from known contributors, could be two new sections your readers would enjoy and look forward to. Let’s keep newspapers alive and well!
