I first met Richard Matthews on the Memorial Middle School PTA, where he brought energy and passion to supporting teachers and providing quality experiences for kids.
Later, Dick ably led the school board through years of difficult budget and contract negotiations. He championed both the music and theater programs that my children loved, and the sports programs he himself played in as a young man.
Under his leadership, South Portland schools have been safe, welcoming spaces for students who might not feel so safe or welcome in other schools, including LGBTQ+ students, children of asylum-seeking families and children whose families are struggling with homelessness.
The school board provided a front row seat on forces changing our city, and Dick showed compassion, wisdom and willingness to grow. He respects our city’s past and has demonstrated commitment to a progressive, equitable future.
That’s why I support Richard Matthews for City Council.
