It appears obvious to me, after reading the Oct. 25 letter from Mark Seibel complaining about the increase in the standard deduction (“Where’s the outrage over higher standard tax deductions?”), that he does not understand increasing the standard deduction reduces one’s taxes.
Additionally, I do not think the Portland Press Herald realizes this either – as printing something so misleading, two weeks before an election, is grossly irresponsible.
Some voters, who also don’t understand, may be outraged enough after reading that letter to cast a vote based on the erroneous belief their taxes are going up and not down.
I suggest the Press Herald check with an accountant to verify I am correct and quickly print a note clarifying the issue.
