There’s a trio of new exhibits opening this week at the Maine Jewish Museum. The opening reception is on Thursday, or you can swing by during First Friday Art Walk or choose a quieter time through early January. “Lucid Dreams: Images in Photogravure and Palladium” is by Jack Montgomery, “Looking Closely” is by Gretchen Kai Halpert, and “The Blue Door: Israel’s Diversity and Dilemma” is by Hank Paper.

‘The Thanksgiving Play’

The University of Southern Maine Department of Theatre starts its new season on a satirical and hilarious note with “The Thanksgiving Play,” written by Larissa FastHorse and directed by Rachel Price Cooper. When a vegan, street performer and elementary school teacher try to come up with a play that tells the “truth” about Thanksgiving, many feathers get ruffled. Political correctness, historical accuracy and the real meaning of being an ally to the Indigenous community all take center stage, and the laughs will be huge.

‘The Victorian Ladies’ Detective Collective’

It’s 1893 in London, and there’s a murderer on the loose. Could it be Jack the Ripper? A pair of sisters who run a boarding home for women team up with a sassy American actress to crack the case, since Scotland Yard seems to be spinning its wheels. Director Christopher Schario describes “The Victorian Ladies’ Detective Collective” as a female Sherlock Holmes story that addresses some of the same issues women today are still dealing with. Head to Lewiston for murder and mayhem through next weekend.
