We write to offer several clarifications to the newspaper’s recent article (Sept. 28) regarding the proposed library expansion in Scarborough.

The proposed expansion of the Scarborough Public Library focuses on the library’s immediate and long-term needs. The proposed expansion would place Scarborough’s library only in the middle of the pack, size-wise.

A “no” vote will not result in a “Plan B”-sized library project. Rather, a “no” vote kills the project and kills our estimated $3 million fundraising effort. We’ve seen, from the narrow defeat in 2006, the library will not likely be on a ballot with any new design for a long time to come.

The timing of the library expansion is now perfect. The town has been financing development of this proposal since 2019. The project is shovel ready. And the $13 million, 30-year bond will cost the average household about $35 annually.
