Citizens Police Academy
The Gorham Police Department will host its 6th Citizens Police Academy for 10 consecutive Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 14, at 270 Main St.

Classes will be in session from 6-8:30 p.m. each week.
The purpose of the academy is to introduce people to the Maine Criminal Justice System and give them a working knowledge of the Gorham Police Department and its officers. The program will include victimization awareness and hands-on demonstrations. Two classes with the Gorham Fire Department will be incorporated into the curriculum.
“Attendees will have the opportunity to extensively learn from, interact with, and ask questions of the experienced professionals of the Gorham police and fire departments,” a prepared release stated.
The program is free, but enrollment is limited. Applicants must be at least 18, reside in Cumberland County, have no felony or misdemeanor arrests in past five years and must agree to a background check.

Scholarship run
The annual Stephen G. Ward Memorial Scholarship run will be Sept. 11 at Gorham Recreation Department.
The walk and kids fun run start at 8:30 a.m. on the Gorham High School track. The 5K run will begin around 9:15 a.m. after first responders complete the course in full gear. Register for the event at running4free.com.
Ward was a Gorham native killed in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, when an aircraft struck the World Trade Center in New
York City. The event helps ensure a Gorham senior is awarded a $3,500 scholarship every year.
GHS 50th reunion
The Class of 1972 at Gorham High School will hold its 50th reunion from 6-11 p.m. Sept. 10, at Double Tree Hotel in South Portland.
Members of the classes of 1971 and 1973 are also invited.
Tickets are $40 or $70 for a couple. The deadline for response and payment is Sept. 5; contact Donna Aikins at 329-0753.
Friendly fundraiser
White Rock Friendship Club is sponsoring an indoor yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 10 at 34 Wilson Road to raise money for its scholarship fund.
All proceeds will go toward a scholarship for a Gorham High School senior. To donate, message the club on Facebook and a drop-off time will be scheduled at the Community Clubhouse Building.
Craft festival
More than 40 craft and food vendors will be at the United Maine Craftsmen Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10, at the town-owned Chick property at 270 Main St. Admission is $2; see unitedmainecraftsmen.com.
50 years ago
The American Journal reported Aug. 30, 1972, that the Pilgrim Fellowship of First Parish Congregational Church attended a cookout given by Mrs. William Rust of West Gorham.
U.S. taxpayer debt
The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported Aug. 25 that the U.S. public debt was $30,824,380,608,762.88.
